Several medical departments shared the AMC outpatient surgery clinic. When the Pediatric Surgery clinic moved into an adjacent space, AMC decided to reconfigure the 5,000-sf general surgery clinic to provide better patient flow and increase the number of exam rooms.

Hyman Hayes Associates was asked to design the new space. The reconfigured layout moved check-in/check-out to the front with a 56-seat waiting area immediately adjacent. Nine new exam rooms, three dictation rooms, a separate nurses' station, and a two-station scheduling area were carved out of the space.

Because various departments within the overall medicine area use the clinic, the creation of the new exam pod allows different groups to see patients at the same time while still maintaining their own presence.
