This project involved the consolidation of several disjointed services into a central location. Pulmonary medicine exam rooms were on one floor, pulmonary function testing in another building, physician offices elsewhere, and gastroenterology services were even more spread out. Albany Medical Center asked Hyman Hayes Associates to plan and design a new 20,000-sf space for the two departments.

In the new design, both departments share a check-in/registration/waiting area, medical records, and conference and break rooms. Functionally, the two departments use the unit at opposite ends of the day but the clinical exam area was still designed with two separate exam areas, with a total of 14 exam rooms.

The attached endoscopy suite was designed with a circular patient traffic flow. From a five-bay change/pre-procedure area, patients go to one of six procedure rooms, then to a six-bay recovery area, finally to a six-chair step-down area with recliners.

Physician and support staff offices are located within or immediately adjacent to the exam suite.
