Albany Medical Center planned to relocate 9,000-sf of clinical space at its South Clinical Campus Facility for the Hospital's nationally recognized Urology Division, as well as 1,800-sf for Department of Urology offices in an attached professional building.

To make room for the clinic renovation, several existing uses, including Medical Records, Sterilizer/Decontamination, Pharmacy, and selected offices were relocated within the facility. The $855,000 renovation required a complete gut removal within the department's shell. The layout produced a separate Urology Suite with 10 windowed exam rooms at the perimeter and support and procedure rooms at the center.

The procedure rooms are located off an interior corridor separate from the exam rooms so patients going in for a procedure do not cross paths with patients in exam rooms.

Because the Urology Division is nationally recognized, the Division Chairman's intent was to have the suite entrance "dressed up" to stand apart from other hospital areas. The design incorporated an alcove off the main corridor, a vaulted ceiling, and wood veneer paneling. The check-in/check-out stations required extensive interaction with users to achieve a balance between openness and privacy for confidentiality.
