Albany Med's existing Blood Bank laboratory, used for typing and analyzing blood samples, was a small, cramped space with staff and equipment spread around wherever space was available. As a result, the Hospital commissioned Hyman Hayes Associates to program and design the renovation of the 775-sf space to provide a more efficient and consolidated laboratory.

The main focus of the renovation was providing a new central workstation. Common equipment, including centrifuges, cell washers, and sink, are located at the end of the workstation. New mechanical and electrical systems were required as well as a liquid nitrogen manifold. To keep the laboratory in operation, the project was split into three phases and construction was performed at night.
