Albany Molecular Research's Biocatalysis Division (formerly EnzyMed, Inc.), which provides research services in the drug discovery and development process, had outgrown their 'start-up' company lab space at the University of Iowa's incubator. Hyman Hayes Associates was commissioned to program and design new lab space in an existing 9,600-sf building.

Our design provided three laboratory areas: chemistry, enzymology, and analytical, all with attached writing areas as

well as common equipment and wash stations. The $1.2-million project includes a modular layout with dividing partitions to control noise, while a central circulation path connects the various lab areas. A small, open meeting area was provided in the laboratory to encourage collaboration. Other spaces include an NMR room, various support rooms, staff areas, a six-person administrative suite with conference room, and large library with custom cabinets. To differentiate the new lab entry from others nearby, a 'high-tech' style canopy has been installed at the entry.
