Albany Medical Center planned to add a PET scanner to the hospital's outpatient Cancer Center to provide another level of patient service. AMC asked Hyman Hayes Associates to plan and design the PET scan suite.

A new 1,630-sf suite was carved out of former patient exam and support rooms. The PET scan suite uses the Cancer Center waiting room and registration functions but was designed to be inconspicuous, out of the main patient travel route, and isolated from the constant activity of the center.

The use of radioisotopes, requiring extensive lead shielding, existing structural constraints, and existing large duct chases complicated the layout. The entire suite was designed to be comfortable and soothing, especially the prep areas, where patients can wait up to 45 minutes following the administration of the radioisotopes.
