The Department of Veteran Affairs commissioned Hyman Hayes Associates to provide design and coordination services for a replacement MRI at its Stratton VA Medical Center. Several issues complicated the project, including location of the space on an upper floor of an occupied clinical wing, structural modifications needed for the heavier equipment, and the coordination of extensive support work in adjacent areas.

The design's intent was to provide a less claustrophobic experience for a potentially frightening procedure. A new large window was incorporated into the space, an up-lit soffit with finishes simulating clouds was incorporated above the patient table, and finishes were selected throughout to provide a serene environment. |
