Hyman Hayes Associates conducted a feasibility study and design for the $1.25-million gut renovation of a 7,425-sf floor of a 75-year-old classroom/laboratory building to provide new classrooms. Several design options were studied to maximize utilization by varying the number of classrooms and labs and the number of seats in each.

The selected layout relocated the center loaded corridor to the perimeter to provide four larger classrooms of 20-44 students each with two rooms divided by a folding partition allowing for a group presentation to over 80 students. The rooms include overhead projectors and flat panel presentation screens. Common equipment storage and 3-stall, men's and women's toilets were also provided. In addition to space utilization, the overall building was reviewed to determine required upgrades. New work included installation of new windows, fire alarm, sprinkler system, HVAC units and ductwork. To meet egress requirements an enclosed stair tower was also contructed.
