Hyman Hayes Associates designed a two-story addition to an existing building at Albany Medical Center. The $8.5-million project contains a combination of medical offices and facilities related functions.

There were several obstacles to the 34,000-sf addition. Modifications to the existing structure were required to support the additional floors. Much of this work was being phased around existing operations to minimize disruptions. Another obstacle was the varying floor elevations between the addition and the existing building. The addition required higher floor-to-floor heights to accommodate the new structure and mechanical systems requiring a ramp between buildings.

The existing building type did not allow for constructing an addition on top of it. A required variance from New York State code offices was successfully obtained, allowing the project to move forward.
