Albany Medical Center took the opportunity to plan future renovations to its Radiation Oncology Department when it decided to replace its outdated simulator. Because of space and layout issues resulting from planned equipment purchases, the department had to be completely reconfigured. Hyman Hayes Associates was commissioned to undertake the project.

The design provided a large simulator room with an entire wall of cabinet equipment storage. The control area is large enough for six doctors and technicians and provides access from both the simulator room and an adjacent corridor, allowing staff to enter and exit without disturbing the patient. Other new spaces included four exam rooms, a film processing room, stretcher holding area, a radioactive materials storage room, and support facilities.

The department had to remain in operation throughout the renovation. A 'domino' construction approach, in four major phases, was developed to allow for continued operation in areas not affected.
