Patients that face treatment for life-threatening diseases or are in end-of-life situations must be provided with humanizing environments that provide dignity and comfort. Spaces that are intimate, that provide a connection to nature, that foster family participation and interaction, and that provide patients with opportunities for reflection and quiet are key goals for our designs. There are ways to downplay the clinical nature of an environment even in a hospital setting. In addition, the ability to give staff a place to step away and recharge should not be neglected in these highly draining environments.
