A confidential client commissioned Hyman Hayes Associates to prepare a master plan for the relocation of their entire research and administration functions to an undeveloped site on the East Campus of SUNY Albany.
Our investigation indicated that a total of 480,000-sf was required, approximately one-third administrative space and two-thirds lab space. Working within zoning requirements that restricted building heights to a maximum of three stories, Hyman Hayes Associates designed various options. The selected design called for a separate administration building, two lab buildings, a cafeteria/ library/conference building, all connected by a circulation spine.

The 19-acre undeveloped site is long and narrow, constricted on three sides. Access is from an internal campus road at one end. At the opposite end is a steep hillside, which offers superb views of downtown Albany and excellent visibility/exposure for the facility. The design's footprint provides a progression of buildings along the spine - from the more public to the more private -starting with the administration building, to greet visitors, and ending with the cafeteria/library.
