St. Mary's Hospital was the second hospital in the Capital District area to install Advanced Breast Biopsy Instrumentation (ABBI), which uses X-ray technology that allows a surgeon to precisely find the location to take a needle biopsy. This minimizes cutting and leads to quicker healing.

The hospital sought to create a private suite within the hospital, with a warm environment to minimize patient apprehension, and asked Hyman Hayes Associates to prepare a number of design alternatives. The selected alternative made use of a not-in-service Endoscopy room and an adjoining locker room thereby minimizing construction and cost. This unit included a separate entry from the main hospital corridor so that ABBI patients could enter and leave discreetly.
